Defending champion Michele Scarponi won the fourth stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico on Saturday and took the overall lead. Scarponi broke away from a small group of riders on a steep climb about 2.5 miles from the finish and completed the hilly 151-mile route from San Gemini to Chieti in 6 hours, 23 minutes, 47 seconds.
Xavier Tondo of Spain won the sixth stage of the Paris-Nice race after a long solo breakaway on Saturday, while Alberto Contador of Spain kept the overall lead. Tondo broke away after 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) of a hilly 220-kilometer (136.4-mile) trek from Peynie to Tourrettes-sur-Loup and beat Alejandro Valverde of Spain by five seconds.

Tirreno-Adriatico on Saturday and seize the overall lead.
Daniele Bennati won the third stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico race to overtake Linus Gerdemann for the overall lead. The Italian, who rides for Liquigas, broke from the pack in a sprint finish to cross the line first on Friday. Compatriot Alessandro Petacchi was second and Austria’s Bernhard Eisel finished third.
Peter Sagan of Slovakia won the fifth stage of the Paris-Nice race and Alberto Contador of Spain finished close behind to keep the overall lead.
